Corralejo

September 2024 saw the end of the holiday theme starting with a few days in Prague and ending with a weird week in Corralejo. Weird? Well the last time we were there it was as residents moving back to the UK full time and this time we were back as bloody tourists staying once more at Bahiazul.

The complex contains the ‘main’ Bahiazul operated villas but also others we’ve used before: Villas Veaco and KATIS Villas. The upside of booking with Bahiazul is two-fold:

  • Breakfast in their restaurant is included so that sets you up nicely for the day; and
  • You have access to the gym which is relatively good, though not as good as our Pain Cave.

As far as I was concerned, I could simply run or walk but my knees and post-crash issues make that uncomfortable to say the least, plus I wanted to ride a bike anyway.  This meant hiring a mountain bike from Easy Riders which was a painless experience and recommended.  As I knew I’d be heading out on the roads past the dunes, I needed to wear a bike helmet and didn’t fancy hiring one, so I bought an alpinestars Vector Pro Atom helmet and some needlessly flash Galibier Campionissimo Luxury gloves. Both were excellent.

The hire bike – a Trek Marlin 7 – had two issues for me:

  1. The gearing was great for climbs and no doubt spot-on for off-road riding, but on the road I was unable to pedal quicker than 31km/h due to the low gearing (104rpm cadence).  My fault for choosing an MTB but the road surfaces can be a tad iffy out there.
  2. The seat post kept descending due to my weight and the bumps, so I was needing to stop to heave it back up again because I didn’t have the necessary Allen key.

Lesson learned and next time I may hire a road bike or choose one with a larger front sprocket.

Anyway, here are September’s stats:

September 2024 Stats

September 2024 Stats

Activities: 41 Distance: 406.47 km Time: 31:12:40 Calories:  20,118

Turning to my weight, at the end of August I weighed 85.4kg and at the end of September I weighed 87.1kg, which is up 1.7kg.  Too many good breakfasts and restaurant dinners!

November started off with our last flights out of Corralejo as we give up our place out there to allow us to tour the rest of Europe; we were prevented from doing so by Brexit, of course.

So on Fuerteventura, the road cycling ended with the sale of the mountain bike after some 2,465km.

Back in the UK and it was back on the Schwinn and FulGaz who are now running a four week boot camp to prepare for their “Tour de FulGaz” in January.

Here are November’s stats:

November 2023 Stats

November 2023 Stats

Activities: 24 Distance: 356.59 kmTime: 15:31:30 Calories: 13,843

Turning to my weight, at the end of October I was 85.3kg, and at the end of November I weighed 85.5kg, up 0.2kg, so maintaining a fairly constant weight whilst eating healthily and not drinking too much. Oh and loads of time in the Pain Cave.

October started off with our postponed flight out to Corralejo; needlessly postponed, as it had turned out.

Once on Fuerteventura, the road cycling resumed with just a weekend break while I went over to Gran Canaria with friends to tour the island by motorcycle.  Early in the month, my time for the regular 15km and a bit reached its lowest, so that was a good thing.

So here are October’s stats:

October 2023 Stats

October 2023 Stats

Activities: 24 Distance: 322.29 kmTime: 16:50:45 Calories: 15,723

Turning to my weight, at the end of September I was 84.3kg, and at the end of October I weighed 85.3kg, up 1kg, so what’s going on there, God only knows (but I think I’m gaining muscle especially in my thighs).

August started out in Fuerteventura for a few days before we headed back to the UK.  It ended with us flying out to Dubai for a week and a bit in a five star, all-inclusive resort which thankfully had a gym but was using Technogym kit and software, sadly.

Here are the results which are up from July’s:

August 2023 Statistics

August 2023 Statistics

Activities: 39 Distance: 476.41 kmTime: 22:39:33 Calories: 20,176

Turning to my weight, at the end of July I was 83.9kg, and at the end of August I weighed 84.1kg, up 0.2kg, but then there was Dubai…

July started out in Fuerteventura for a few days before I had to head back to the UK to then fly out to Johannesburg for a week and a half of pretty much full-on work that left no time for exercise, sadly. I did manage one workout in the hotel’s very basic gym on the Sunday morning before heading in to the Client’s office, but that was it.

Here are the results which are way down on June’s:

July 2023 Statistics

July 2023 Statistics

Activities: 21 Distance: 257.86 km Time: 16:28:38 Calories: 14,505

Turning to my weight, at the end of June I was 83.5kg, and after an impromptu meal out last night, this morning I weighed 83.9kg, up 0.4kg, but also up 0.9kg from the day before, so nothing to worry about.

Starting back at home in Ash, it was a lot of virtual cycling with the occasional walk on a ‘rest’ day, then we flew back out to Corralejo the last Monday of June.

Here are the stats:

June 2023 Stats

June 2023 Stats

Activities: 28 Distance: 556.93 km Time: 20:19:17 Calories: 17,855

As for weight stats, at the end of June I was 83.5kg, up 1.4kg from 82.1kg in May. Must. Try. Harder.

We came back from  Corralejo, Fuerteventura, in early May 2023 so this month was a mixture of real-world cycling, virtual cycling and the occasional walk.

These are the stats:

May 2023 Stats

May 2023 Stats

Activities: 29 Distance: 502.23 km Time: 22:12:12 Calories: 18,956

Moving on to weight, at the end of April I weighed 85kg but by the end of May I was down 2.9kg to 82.1kg with a low of 81.8kg.

April 2023 was spent in Corralejo, Fuerteventura, so that meant lots of real-world cycling and the occasional walk or hike during photoshoots/location scouting.

One downside was an ear infection needing a visit to the Centro Salud – which is still not properly sorted – that seemed to be going around friends and family.

Still, these are the stats:

April 2023 Stats

April 2023 Stats

Activities: 28 Distance: 304.14 km Time: 18:27:44 Calories: 12,657

Moving on to weight, at the end of March I weighed 83.7kg but by the end of April I was up 1.3kg to 85kg due to family being out for 2 weeks plus my birthday meals. {sigh}

61 today! Dear Lord…

I celebrated by getting back on the pushbike for the first time in a few days as there have been strong winds and storms (enough for a weather warning here in Fuerteventura) but even so it was very windy and difficult, especially as it was a Northerly wind and the coast road heading back is North.

In the past 12 months, I’ve also gone from weighing 97kg this time last year to 85kg this morning (a loss of 12kg or nearly two stones). Sadly, I’ve gained a kilo in the last week because we’ve been eating out and the cooler weather pushed us towards some different food, but I’m really pleased.

As noted in last month’s stats, we moved house in early March and it took a few more days to set up the home gym before we headed back out to Corralejo.

In the meantime, we had family come over to stay, bringing with us a nice viral infection that hit Alison first and then me, affecting sleep and hence energy levels. Bloody kids!

March 2023 Stats

March 2023 Stats

Activities: 11 Distance: 185.54 km Time: 6:25:41 Calories: 6,262

In terms of weight, at the end of February I weighed 85.1kg and at the end of March I was down to 83.7kg, down by 1.4kg.
